PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of achieving shortening of a first copying time without causing deterioration in image quality, and to provide an image forming method therefor. SOLUTION: Read data of an original P is acquired and it is determine whether or not leading edge side read data corresponding to a reading area positioned on the leading edge side of the original P out of the acquired read data satisfies a predetermined condition. A latent image forming start time for forming an electrostatic latent image on a photoreceptor 204 is set earlier in accordance with a result of determination showing that the condition is satisfied, thereby achieving shortening of the first copying time.
