The method involves determining whether the temperature of a component e.g. turbocharger, of an engine exceeds a predetermined threshold value. A determination is made that whether exhaust gas temperature of the engine exceeds the predetermined threshold value. The exhaust gas temperature is reduced by shifting an ignition angle of the engine before an upper dead center of a crank angle of a crankshaft at a range of 20 to 30 degrees, for performing advance ignition, when the temperature of the component and/or the exhaust gas temperature exceed the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing the exhaust gas temperature of an engine.
