PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an onboard memory unit damage prevention system for preventing a damage of a memory medium (disk) even when an impact is given to an unspecified position in an ever-changing traffic conditions. SOLUTION: A hard disk is provided on a vehicle adopting the system. When collision is monitored in the vehicle , surroundings of the vehicle is actually monitored, and it is decided whether a monitored vehicle located around the vehicle is likely to collide so that a head may damage the disk (S11). Also, it is decided whether the impact produced when the monitored vehicle collides with the vehicle causes the head to damage the disk (S16). When it is decided that the head may damage the disk, the head is retracted (S17). Accordingly, through the above processing, the damage of the memory medium (disk) mounted on the vehicle can be prevented even when the impact is given to the unspecified position in the ever-changing traffic conditions.
