PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of accurately estimating a cetane number even under the existence of the displacement of ignition timing caused by a variation of the tooth-shape working tolerance of a pulsar and a compression ratio. SOLUTION: An adaptation map 100 indicating a relation of cetane numbers and ignition delays for an engine being a reference is determined. Fuel of which the cetane number is known (its value is CN0) is supplied to an engine to be used and an ignition delay T1 is measured when the engine is shipped out of a plant. Correction for shifting the adaptation map 100 to a broken line 101 in parallel is executed to overlap a point P0 at which the cetane number is CN0 in the adaptation map 100 on a point P1 at which the cetane number is CN0 and the ignition delay is T1. The cetane number is estimated from the ignition delay by using the corrected adaptation map 101 to adjust ignition timing during actual travel. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
