PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a differential rotating speed to converge into a target differential rotating speed, even when determined that it is difficult to converge this differential rotating speed in the target differential rotating speed, when the differential rotating speed between the input side and the output side of a torque converter largely varies, in automatic neutral control of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: When determining that an automatic neutral condition is realized in a state of setting a select lever in a travel range such as a D range (S11), the differential rotating speed Net between the input side and the output side of the torque converter 2 is calculated from a difference between an engine speed Ne and a turbine rotating speed Nt (S13), and when hunting is caused since this differential rotating speed Net falls wide of a steady area Ntg±Nw, the target differential rotating speed Ntg is increased by a skip quantityα(S23), and the differential rotating speed Net is restrained in the steady area Ntg±Nw, and differential rotational hunting is converged in the target differential rotating seed Ntg.
