PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compiling system adapted to receive sheets of media from an associated output pathway of an associated media transport system although a sheet handling system utilizing a sheet compiling system to collect and organize the sheets of media into one or more packets or stacks thereof is known. SOLUTION: A printing system 100 includes a sheet media source 102, at least one printing engine 118 and a control system 108 for communicating with a finishing unit 106. The control system determines arrival of a sheet of the media in the finishing unit, operates a variable-speed compiling system 126 at a first speed before engaging with the sheet of the media, and, after engaging with the sheet of the media, operates the variable-speed compiling system at a second speed before the sheet of the media contacts at least one registration surface and operates the variable-speed compiling system so that the sheet of the media is substantially positioned with the at least one registration surface.
