PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protonated compound having antimicrobial activity, and an antimicrobial composition comprising the protonated compound, wherein the protonated compound provides efficacious antimicrobial activity against resistant strains of bacteria and opportunistic fungi. SOLUTION: Provided is the antimicrobial composition comprising, (a) the protonated compound, the compound comprising the structure X-Y-Z (wherein X and Z are end blocking agents and Y is phosphorus having a site comprising one or more protonated sites), and the compound comprises one or more exogenous protons introduced to reactive sites in the compound, and (b) an excipient.
