PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EGR system capable of removing the soot adhered to the passage inner walls of an EGR cooler without deteriorating the fuel economy and the operating conditions of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: An EGR device including an EGR valve (12) and the EGR cooler (13) is installed in an EGR passage (10). An electric heater (16) is installed in the EGR passage further on the exhaust passage (8) side than the EGR cooler. When the EGR cooler is requested for heating, the EGR device is so controlled that at least the inflow of exhaust gas into the EGR cooler is allowed and the electric heater is electrified.
