PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid temperature drop and oxygen storage quantity excessive increase of a catalytic converter when part of cylinders are deactivated. SOLUTION: When deactivation of part of cylinders is started, change over from burned exhaust gas to air is judged based on increase of oxygen concentration in exhaust gas of the deactivated cylinders and drop of exhaust gas temperature. When air passing through the deactivated cylinder flows in an exhaust system, the air passing through the deactivated cylinders is made flow with bypassing the catalytic converter. When operation of the part of cylinders is restarted, change over from to air burned exhaust gas is determined based on decrease of oxygen concentration in exhaust gas and increase of exhaust gas temperature. When burned exhaust gas from the cylinder of which operation is restarted flows in the exhaust system, burned exhaust gas from the cylinder of which operation is restarted is introduced to the catalytic converter.
