Provided is a liquid crystal display element wherein high display qualities and low cost are both achieved while having a function as a capacitance-type touch panel. The liquid crystal display element is provided with a liquid crystal display cell (10), and a compensating cell (20) arranged to face the liquid crystal display cell (10) so as to improve optical characteristics of the liquid crystal display cell (10). At least a transparent electrode group (28) of the touch panel is formed on compensating glass bodies (21, 22) of the compensating cell (20) so as to have the compensating cell (20) function as the capacitance-type touch panel. The compensating cell (20) has a structure wherein a space between the compensating glass body (21) and the compensating glass body (22) is filled with a liquid crystal (26), and the transparent electrode group (28) is arranged on the inner facing surfaces of the compensating glass bodies (21, 22), respectively.
