The device i.e. hob (1), has cooking areas (2, 3) e.g. induction cooking areas, and a roast sensor (4) for detecting temperature of a cookware that is arranged on the associated area (3). A controller (5) controls the area (3) based on the detected temperature. The controller is programmed to adjust a power supply to the area (3) to a reduced activity value, to fix the detected temperature value as a target temperature value after termination of a decay period and to reset the power supply to the target temperature value, as a reaction of activation of a simmering process for the area (3). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a cooking plate.
