PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for using a function unique to an electronic writing tool even with a cap on while preventing an erroneous operation. SOLUTION: The electronic writing tool is composed of a pen chip 69 as a writing part capable of writing on a medium; a writing tool body having reading means (63, 64, etc.) for reading an image on the medium; and a cap 610, wherein the body further includes a control means for controlling operations of the reading means (63, 64, etc.) on the basis of a detection result by a cap position detection function unit 625 as a position detection means for detecting a mounting position of the cap 610 to the body. When obtaining a predetermined detection result that the mounting position from the function position 625 is a position other than a defined position, the control means does not allow the operations of the reading means (63, 64, etc.) and when not obtaining the predetermined detection result, the control means allows the operations of the reading means (63, 64, etc.).
