PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive fall preventing device which has a simple structure, which is surely activated, and which does not need adjustment in an elevator of a type that a sprocket is meshed with a rack rail. SOLUTION: This fall preventing device 6 of an elevator comprises a pair of guide members 9 for holding a sprocket 4 while maintaining an angle of a rotary face of the sprocket 4 in a predetermined range when a drive shaft 4a is fractured, and an engagement member 10 meshed with the sprocket 4 and blocking its rotation when the drive shaft 4a is fractured and the sprocket 4 is displaced relatively upward to a cage 3. A pair of the guide members 9 approach both parallel side faces of the sprocket 4, and are provided on the cage 3 along the side faces.
