The method involves collecting velocity data of the motor vehicle for a traveling street type during a journey of the vehicle. A reference velocity is determined and stored by a statistical evaluation from the velocity data for the traveling street type. A driver is assigned with a reference speed for traveling street type. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for operating a navigation system; and (2) a computer program with program instructions.
