A method and a device for diagnosing one or more gas exchange valves of one or more cylinders in an internal combustion engine are provided to inspect remarkably change of a variable characterizing measured sound wave when being converted from a first operating state to a second operating state. A method for diagnosing one or more gas exchange valves of one or more cylinders in an internal combustion engine comprises following steps. One or more gas exchange valves of one or more cylinders(2) are activated in the first operating state of the internal combustion engine. The whole gas exchange valve of one or more cylinders is deactivated in the second operating state of the internal combustion engine and is closed at the steady- state. The variable characterizing the sound wave measured through the diagnosis method is remarkably changed when being converted from the first operating state to the second operating state. In case variable characterizing the measured sound wave is remarkably changed, the wrong opening of one or more gas exchange valves is sensed.
