PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera having reduced release time lag. SOLUTION: When a release button is half depressed, a photographing diaphragm, an electronic shutter speed and photographic sensitivity are determined on the basis of the luminance of a subject, and a diaphragm device is controlled so as to be the photographing diaphragm. When the release button is fully depressed, a parameter for allowing the digital camera to operate in a still picture exposure mode, an electronic shutter speed for still picture exposure and a parameter for driving timing of a mechanical shutter are set in a timing generator. After that, an instruction for restart is given to the timing generator. A photographing vertical synchronous signal VI is activated immediately after the restart, the parameter for still picture photographing is validated at that timing, and still picture exposure is executed.
