A friction welding apparatus is provided to reduce the apparatus size by friction-welding two work pieces while relatively rotating them. A friction welding apparatus comprises a first holder(2), a second holder(3), a thrust mechanism(8), and a shaft(7). The first holder and the second holder support a first work piece and a second work piece, respectively. The thrust mechanism moves the second holder close to or away from the first holder. The shaft is connected to the first and the second holder and receives the thrust generated by the thrust mechanism, and has male screw members(7B) which are connected to a tie rod(7A). The thrust mechanism has a male screw member, a female screw member(8B) formed on one of the second holder and the first holder to be coupled with the male screw member, and a thrust motor(8A) which rotates the male screw member relative to the female screw member.
