An apparatus for spinal surgery including a first member (506) configured to engage tissue, a second member (518) configured to engage tissue, a telescoping support member (508) operatively associated with the first and second members, such that the first and second members are movable relative to each other; and a lock mechanism (700) associated with the telescoping support member and configured to maintain the first and second members in a fixed relative position.
