This invention provides an Li-Ni composite oxide particle powder for a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte, which has a high charge/discharge capacity and has excellent filling properties and storage properties. The Li-Ni composite oxide particle powder for a rechargeable battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte has a composition represented by LixNi1-y-zCoyAlzO2 wherein 0.9 < x < 1.3, 0.1 < y < 0.3, and 0 < z < 0.3). The percentage change of the specific surface area between before the application of a pressure of 1 t/cm2 and after the application of the pressure and the content of sulfate ions are not more than 10% and not more than 1.0%, respectively. This Li-Ni composite oxide particle powder can be produced by mixing a Ni-Co hydroxide particle powder, having a sulfate ion content of not more than 1.0% and coated on its particle surface with an Al compound having a primary particle diameter of not more than 1 mum, with a lithium compound, and baking the mixture. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009 |
