A coding method and encoder are provided. The encoder includes: a feature parameter extracting unit (101), used to obtain the feature parameter of the input signal; a signal type determining unit (102), used to determine the type of the input signal according to the feature parameter; a vector generating unit (103), used to generate the vector to be quantized according to the feature parameter; a judgement unit (105), used to select corresponding code book to search for the vector to be quantized according to the type of the input signal which is determined by the signal type determining unit (102). ® KIPO & WIPO 2009
