An apparatus for determining channel quality information in consideration of the beam forming in a multi-antenna system and a method thereof are provided to obtain a multi-user diversity gain and scheduling fairness in consideration of a beam forming gain. A beam former(205) multiplies each frequency tone of sections in which a channel is constant by different beam forming weighting factors to form a beam. A beam forming vector unit(207) comprises a beam forming weighting factor set. A detecting unit(211) receives a beam-formed preamble signal to estimate a channel vector. A CQI(Channel Quality Indicator) calculator(217) calculates the channel power on a frequency tone in which a preamble signal is transmitted.
