A method for welding first and second components (3, 1) of respective first and second metals, by ultrasonic welding using a sonotrode (6), includes (a) obtaining a curve of sonotrode power versus time for the metal pair, (b) approximating the curve to two successive straight lines (the second of greater slope) intersecting at the point of change of slope and (c) carrying out welding until the point of change of slope is reached or exceeded. A method for welding a first component (C1) (3) of a first metal (M1) to a second component (C2) (1) of a second metal (M2) involves placing part of C1 on the anvil (5) of a sonotrode (6) and pressing C2 and another part of C1 together under vibration by the sonotrode active part (7), which provides power to compact C1 and C2 together. The novelty is that the process includes (a) obtaining a curve giving the power provided by the sonotrode as a function of time for the particular M1/M2 metal pair (e.g. aluminum/copper), (b) approximating the curve to two successive straight lines (the second having a greater slope than the first), the intersection of the lines defining the point of change of slope of the curve, and (c) carrying out the welding for a period such that the point of change of slope is reached or exceeded. Independent claims are included for: (1) a variant of the process, in which the curve is of the pressure or force exerted by the sonotrode (rather than the force) as a function of time; (2) a second variant of the process, in which the curve is of the course of the relative embedding of the materials M1 and M2 as a function of time; and (3) corresponding ultrasonic welding apparatus, having an anvil (5) for supporting C1 (3) on a first part of its surface and an active part (7) for applying periodic vibration to compact C2 (1) against another part of the surface of C1, the novelty being that systems are provided to (a) provide a trace giving the power provided by the sonotrode (6) as a function of time, (b) estimate the two successive straight lines (the second having a greater slope than the first) from the curve and (c) interrupt the function of the sonotrode (utilizing a regulating system) when the change in slope is reached. |
