Dye composition (I) comprises 3-amino 2-methylamino-6-methoxypyridine or its acid addition salts, one or more oxidation dye and one or more quaternary diammonium polycondensate having repeating units (a), in a medium. Dye composition (I) comprises 3-amino 2-methylamino-6-methoxypyridine or its acid addition salts, one or more oxidation dye and one or more quaternary diammonium polycondensate having repeating units of formula (-N +>(R 13)(R 14)(X ->)-A 1-N +>(R 15)(R 16)(X ->)-B 1) (a) in a medium. Either R 13, R 14, R 15, R 16aliphatic group, alicyclic group, 1-6C aliphatic aryl, aliphatic lower hydroxyalkyl or 1-6C alkyl (substituted by a nitrile group, ester, acyl, amide, -CO-O-R 17-D, -CO-NH-R 17-D or R 17); and A 1, B 12-6C polymethylene linked to or intercalated in the main chain (optionally saturated and containing one or more aromatic rings, O, S, sulfoxide groups, sulfone, disulfide, amino, alkylamino, hydroxyl, quaternary ammonium, ureido or ester); or NR 13R 14, NR 15R 16hetero cycle including optionally a second hetero atom other than nitrogen; or NNA 1R 3R 15piperazine ring; R 17alkylene; D : a quaternary ammonium group; and X ->anion derived from an inorganic or organic acid. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method of dyeing keratin fibers, comprising applying (I) to the keratin fibers in the presence of an oxidizing agent for a sufficient time to develop the desired coloration; and (2) multi-compartment device comprising: a first compartment containing (I); and a second compartment containing one or more oxidizing agents.
