<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fiber material suitable for improvement of mechanical strength in the thickness direction of a wet friction material, and to provide the wet friction material using a fiber assembly including the fiber material. <P>SOLUTION: The crimped short fiber is a short fiber comprising an organic high-molecular weight polymer, and satisfies the following requirements: having≥25% average curl degree C represented by the equation: (average curl degree C)=C<SB>0.5</SB>/N<SB>0.5</SB>[wherein, C<SB>0.5</SB>is the sum of the following C: C=(l-d)/l×100 äwherein, l is the whole fiber length (mm) (the length in a curl-less state); d is the distance (mm) between both terminals of the short fiber; and C is the curl degree of the short fiber} of the short fibers having≥0.5 mm lengths; and N<SB>0.5</SB>is the total number of fibers having≥0.5 mm lengths] and wet friction material using the same.
