PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging optical system satisfying the improvement of performance and miniaturization simultaneously, and to provide an imaging apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: The imaging optical system and the imaging apparatus using the optical system includes in the order from an object side, an imaging optical system composed of a diaphragm S and three single lenses that are a first positive lens L1 of positive single lens whose absolute value of the radius of curvature of image side on the optical axis is smaller than the absolute value of radius of curvature of object side on the optical axis, a second negative lens L2 of negative single lens whose absolute value of radius of curvature of image side on the optical axis is smaller than the absolute value of radius of curvature of the object side on the optical axis, and a third positive lens L3 of positive single lens, and an imaging element arranged on the image focusing surface I. The imaging apparatus satisfies a conditional formula of a ratio of focal distance to maximum image height of the first positive lens; a conditional formula of a ratio of focal distance to maximum image height of the second negative lens; and a conditional formula of a ratio of focal distance to maximum image height of the third positive lens.
