PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer belt device for an image forming apparatus, the belt device being able to prevent transfer failure. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer unit 20 includes: an endless intermediate transfer belt 24; a primary transfer roller 25 disposed opposite a corresponding photoreceptor drum 120 with the intermediate transfer belt 24 between them; a holder 26 holding three primary transfer rollers 25 opposite the corresponding color photoreceptor drums 120 and disposed in a frame 21 so as to be rotatable; a cam drive shaft 27 on which a pair of cams 271 is disposed to rotate the holder 26 and which is supported by the frame 21 so as to be rotatable; a tension roller 28 that applies prescribed tension to the intermediate transfer belt 24; and an arm 29 holding the tension roller 28 so that the roller 28 may be able to swing perpendicular to its axial direction.
