<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a control resolution for making a wider torque output range possible. <P>SOLUTION: A multiphase DC electric motor 602 to be commutated individually includes a phase winding for each phase to have a torque constant and generates a torque in response to a drive current to be supplied to each phase winding. A controller 604 receives a torque command to express the magnitude of a desired torque generated by the multiphase DC motor and a phase shift command. The controller 604 controls a peak amplitude and a phase of a winding current of each winding when the torque of each winding is relatively small or controls only the peak amplitude of the current of each winding when the torque of each winding is relatively large, based on the torque command and the phase shift command.
