PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant applying device capable of maintaining stably a lubricant applied state on an image carrier surface over from a factory delivery time up to a product component life, without depending on a using condition and an environmental condition, and capable of preventing a solid lubricant from being abraded unevenly. SOLUTION: The lubricant applying device 8 includes the solid lubricant 82 for imparting a lubricant to an image carrier 1, a lubricant support member 84 for supporting the solid lubricant 82, an application brush 81 for conveying the lubricant from the solid lubricant 82 to the image carrier 1, and for applying the lubricant on the image carrier 1, and a spring 85 for bringing the application brush 81 into contact with the image carrier 1, and the lubricant applying device 8 is provided further with a displacement sensor 86 for detecting an uneven abrasion state of the lubricant, a cam 87 for switching an energizing force to the solid lubricant 82 by the spring 85, in order to change a contact state between the solid lubricant 82 energized by the spring 85 and the application brush 81, and a contact state between application brush 81 and the image carrier 1, and a control means 88 for controlling the cam 87, in response to an uneven abrasion amount detected by the displacement sensor 86.
