A hydrothermal decomposition apparatus comprising: a biomass feeder (31) which feeds a biomass material (11) placed at ordinary pressure to an elevated-pressure zone; a hydrothermal decomposition apparatus main body (42A) in which the biomass material (11) fed is gradually moved in a compressed state through the inside of the apparatus main body (42A) from either of the end sides thereof and, simultaneously therewith, pressurized hot water (15) is fed to the inside of the apparatus main body (42A) from the other end side, which is the side different from the biomass material (11) feed side, to hydrothermally decompose the biomass material (11) while keeping the biomass material (11) and the pressurized hot water (15) in countercurrent contact with each other, whereby a lignin ingredient and a hemicellulose ingredient are transferred into the pressurized hot water (15) to separate the lignin ingredient and hemicellulose ingredient from the biomass material (11); and a biomass ejection device (51) which ejects a biomass solid (17) from the apparatus main body (42A) on the side where the pressurized hot water (15) is fed, i.e., from the elevated-pressure zone to an ordinary-pressure atmosphere.
