The system has a fuel injector that directly injects a fuel into a combustion chamber of a cylinder (60) of a spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) engine (54). A control module (80) initiates fuel injection in the combustion chamber during a time period of a combustion cycle of the cylinder through the fuel injector. The control module initiates another fuel injection in the combustion chamber during another time period of the combustion cycle through the fuel injector, where the latter time period is not overlapped with the former time period. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an engine system comprising an exhaust system (2) a method for operating a spark ignition fuel injection (SIDI) engine.
