PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device reducing color unevenness of a projection image by correcting optical characteristics of the whole optical element. SOLUTION: Since a first dichroic mirror 31a has optical characteristics matching incident anglesα,β,γandδof illumination light in A-A and B-B cross sectional directions, deviation of optical characteristics generated according to incident angle dependence of illumination light can be correctly or approximately corrected in the whole of the first dichroic mirror 31a. Accordingly, prescribed wavelength components can be suitably reflected or transmitted in respective regions AL, AC, AR, AU and AD of an element surface 3c of the first dichroic mirror 31a and color unevenness of the whole projection image can be suppressed.
