<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio apparatus capable of shortening a waiting time until transmission. <P>SOLUTION: Reception processing sections 17-20 obtains, as evaluation values, mean values <ξ<SB>C1</SB>><SB>av</SB>,<SB>f1</SB>to <ξ<SB>Cn</SB>><SB>av</SB>,<SB>f4</SB>of absolute values obtained by despreading each of N symbols included in reception signals in frequencies f1-f4 which are each received from a frequency channel monitoring section 16 by n-spread codes C1-Cn. The reception processing sections 17-20 rearrange the n evaluation values <ξ<SB>C1</SB>><SB>av</SB>,<SB>f1</SB>to <ξ<SB>Cn</SB>><SB>av</SB>,<SB>f4</SB>in an ascending order, and selects the defined number of candidate spread codes in an ascending order from the rearranged n-evaluation values and store the selected candidate spread codes. Upon receiving a packet transmission request, the reception processing sections 17-20 randomly select a preferable spread code C<SB>PF</SB>1 from among the defined number of stored candidate spread codes and output the selected spread code to a spread processing section 12.
