PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of decreasing consumption amount of toner used when correcting position displacement, and to provide a method for correcting position displacement. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 for detecting a plotted position displacement correction image 23 and correcting position displacement of an image forming position in a main scanning direction at every predetermined interval according to the detection result, includes: a position displacement amount calculating means 41 configured to calculate the amount of the position displacement a, b and d of the image forming position according to the detection result; a correction amount calculating means 42 configured to calculate a multiplication error deviation correction amount i for correcting multiplication error deviation generated by the multiplication correction based on the amount of the position displacement a, b and d calculated by the position displacement amount calculating means 41; a first determining means 44 configured to determine whether or not to plot the position displacement correction image 23<SB>b</SB>for performing the multiplication error deviation correction according to the multiplication error deviation correction amount i calculated by the correction amount calculating means 42; and a plotting means 45 configured to plot the position displacement correction image 23 according to the determination result by the first determining means 44.
