PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hoisting machine for an elevator capable of surely braking a disk in driving to stop a rope pulley, and surely holding the disk in stopping to continue to stop the rope pulley even when oils is adhered to the disk. SOLUTION: This hoisting machine 10 for an elevator comprises a rope pulley 14 wound around a main cable 4 connected to a car 3 of the elevator, a first disk 15 integrally formed with or rigidly fastened to one end of the rope pulley 14, and a second disk 16 integrally formed with or rigidly fastened to the other end of the rope pulley 14. A first brake 17 for braking the first disk 15 in driving and holding the first disk 15 in stopping is provided adjacent to the first disk 15.
