PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of inexpensively producing a porous sintered compact for a lightweight air bearing, which uses aluminum powder having a density of about 1/3 that of copper or steel and a grain size of about 0.1 mm or alloy powder essentially consisting of aluminum as starting raw materials, has high gas permeability, and can be joined to a back metal by the use of an adhesive or the like. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a method for producing a porous sintered compact for an air bearing 2 essentially consisting of aluminum or an aluminum-silicon alloy characterized in that aluminum powder having the average diameter of 0.05 to 0.7 mm and having a purity of≥99.5% or aluminum-silicon alloy powder containing 1 to 15 mass% silicon is added and mixed with titanium hydride powder having the same diameter, so as to be 0.05 to 0.2 (mass ratio) to 1 of the aluminum, the mixed powder is packed into a graphite die, and is press-molded under the pressurizing force of 2.5 to 5 MPa, and is further sintered at a sintering temperature of 500 to 650°C in a vacuum.
