PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sealing material in which sufficient amount of crystal is deposited in the glass during the heat treatment process for raising the evacuating temperature of a flat display device or the like and at the same time which is excellent in flowability and low heat expansion property (after crystallization), in a sealing material which contains bismuth-based glass powder and refractory filler powder. SOLUTION: The sealing material is characterized in that (1) it contains 40-100 vol% of bismuth-based glass powder and 0-60 vol% of refractory filler powder, in that (2) the bismuth-based glass powder contains as a glass composition by mass% 74-85% Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 4.5-9.5% B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 8-16.5% ZnO and 1.2-8% CuO, in that (3) the bismuth-based glass powder contains as a glass composition by mass fraction 1-10 of ZnO/CuO value and 0.9-3 of ZnO/B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>value, and in that (4) it substantially does not contain PbO.
