A radioactive substance orientation detecting apparatus comprises at least a first ray detecting device (1); at least a second ray detecting device (3); each of at least the first ray detecting device (1) and each of at least the second ray detecting device (3) are arranged side by side in pairs, the detecting planes (4) of the first ray detecting device (1) and the second ray detecting device (3) are in a same plane, permitting them to receive the ray from a same direction in a same way and producing a first detecting signal and a second detecting signal respectively; a ray shielding plate (2), which is arranged between the first ray detecting device (1) and the second ray detecting device (3) in pairs and extends perpendicularly towards the front of the detecting plane (4); a judging device (8), which can receive the first detecting signal and the second detecting signal, and then determine whether the radioactive substance is present or not depending on the first detecting signal and the second detecting signal, and determine the orientation of the radioactive substance depending on the difference between the first detecting signal and the second detecting signal. Besides, a radioactive substance orientation detecting method comprises using the above radioactive substance orientation detecting apparatus to determine the presence and the orientation of the radioactive substance.
