PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piezoelectric actuated fuel injector maintaining the lifetime of an piezoelectric element and increasing the piezoelectric stroke. SOLUTION: A method of operating the fuel injector comprises steps of: (a) reducing the voltage across the actuator at an initial rate (RT0; RT0') so as to de-energize the actuator prior to an initial fuel injection event; (b) increasing the voltage across the actuator at a first rate (RT1) in order to initiate initial fuel injection events (110; 120; 130); (c) reducing the voltage across the actuator at a second rate (RT2) in order to terminate the initial fuel injection events; and (d) increasing the voltage across the actuator at a third rate (RT3; RT3'), which is lower than the first rate (RT1) before the next fuel injection event starts after the initial fuel injection event terminates, so as to de-energize the actuator without initiating any injection event.
