<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication system using distributed Raman amplification which suppresses deterioration of transmission characteristics resulting from a difference in types of transmission paths through simple configuration and simple control. <P>SOLUTION: The WDM optical communication system transmits or receives, before starting operation of a main signal light Ls, a plurality of lights with different wavelengths from the wavelength of the main signal light Ls (e.g., an excitation light for Raman amplification Lp) between first and second optical transmission devices 2A and 2B connected to both ends of a transmission path 1 and monitors transmission path input/output power of each light. The system calculates losses of a transmission path in respective wavelengths using the result of the monitoring and specifies a type of the transmission path based on the loss wavelength characteristics which can be presumed from the calculation result. Then, according to the type of the transmission path, the system optimizes excitation light power to be given to the transmission path 1. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
