PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance homogenety of fuel and air in an internal combustion engine, using only a fuel injection means for injecting fuel directly into a combustion space. SOLUTION: On a side nearer to a cylinder head 1H of an internal combustion engine 1, a tumble flow TF is generated flowing from an intake opening 3io which opens in the cylinder head 1H toward an exhaust opening 3eo which also opens in the cylinder head 1H. A direct injection valve 10 injects fuel directly into a combustion space B. The direct injection valve 10 injects the fuel on a side nearer to an intake gas top dead point than a midpoint between the intake gas top dead point and an intake gas bottom dead point, toward a portion where a piston top face 5T and a cylinder inner face 1Sw intersect.
