PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder reduced in cost and size, improved in power consumption, capable of efficiently performing paper feeding operation, and enhanced in operability when a document or paper is loaded. SOLUTION: This paper feeder 50 comprises a locking piece 73 installed near a paper feed roller bearing part of a support frame 20a for a paper feed roller 52; and a fastening spring 72 as a clutch element which is attached to the shaft part 52a of the paper feed roller 52, which stops the displacement of the support member 63 produced by the action of the connection thereof to the shaft part 52a when the paper feed roller is stopped, and which is engaged with the locking piece 73 when the paper feed roller is rotated to release the action of the connection thereof to the shaft part 52a in a holding mechanism 70 for holding a pickup roller 51 at a retreat position. The pickup roller can be displaced to the paper feed position when the paper feed roller is rotated by easily holding the pickup roller 51 at the retreat position by the action of the fastening spring 72 without using an electric component with a considerably large footprint on a space such as a solenoid.
