PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of preventing increase of the size of a voltage limitation means limiting a starting high-voltage pulse voltage without forming a special pulse voltage detection means, and securing a start pulse voltage required for starting a high-pressure discharge lamp in a specified output wiring length. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device includes the voltage limitation means ZD limiting a starting high-voltage pulse voltage generated between both ends of the high-pressure discharge lamp 8 below a predetermined value, and is provided with a pulse voltage changing circuit 92 raising the high-voltage pulse voltage of a start pulse generation circuit 7 by spending a predetermined period. The high-voltage pulse voltage generated by the start pulse generation circuit 7 changes from a value satisfying the lower limit of the start voltage of the high-pressure discharge lamp at a predefined smallest output wiring length to a value satisfying the lower limit of the start voltage of the high-pressure discharge lamp 8 at the largest output wiring length by spending a predetermined period. The high-voltage pulse voltage keeps a predetermined high-voltage pulse voltage for a certain period, and thereafter starts the change by the pulse voltage changing circuit 92.
