PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent dimensions of contact glass in the vertical scanning direction from increasing by making wide a required reading width, in an image reader having a plurality of reading lines on the contact glass used for skimming of an original. SOLUTION: Color reading lines R, G, B and a monochrome reading line M on the contact glass 18a are in such a relation that, when one is used, the other is not used. When the reading line M is used, when a foreign matter is detected on the reading line M, a first reflection mirror 27 is transferred to the right, and the reading line M is transferred from Q1 to positions Q2, Q3, Q4 on the side of the color reading lines R, G, B. Meanwhile, when the color reading lines R, G, B are used, when foreign matters on them are detected, they are transferred to the side of the monochrome reading line.
