PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for judging the meat character of bovine black-haired Japanese cattle, characterized by detecting the mutation of a bovine ghrelin receptor gene. SOLUTION: The relationship between the mutation of a ghrelin receptor gene at its base level and a gain character such as carcass weight is statistically examined using 1,285 heads of black-haired Japanese cattle indirect test bovine population with environmental effect considered. As a result, it has been found that the combination of a single-base substitution site (the seventh site from a translation initiation point) present in the 5'-nontranslation domain and double-base replication (microsatellite) number mutation, i.e. haplotype, is significantly related to pre-slaughtered weight, body weight at the end of test, body weight increment per day on average, ribs meat thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness character.
