An apparatus and method for monitoring the maintenance condition of a tamping machine comprising: attaching sensors to the bearings, bushes or pins 602-611 of a tamping machine; driving the machine at a speed in the range 20 to 1500 revolutions per minute; and, monitoring the signals from the stress sensors. The sensors may be magnetically attached to the machine, and the signals may be logged and displayed. Also a method of establishing a database of pre-collected stress sensor signals from machines in various states of wear, and comparing the signals from the sensors of a machine under test with the pre-collected signals. Thus selecting a wear condition to match the monitored signals from the machine under test. |
