A method and an apparatus for checking device connected to a potable device are provided to recognize an external device connected to an interface of a portable terminal. A controller(170) comprises a first port, a second port, and a data port. A first connector(141) is connected with USB(Universal Serial Interface) device group. A second connector(143) is connected with a standard common pin connector device group. The controller determines a connection of an external device based on a voltage-state of the first port. The controller determines kind group of the external device based on a voltage-state of the second port. The controller determines kind of the external device based on a voltage-state of the data port among the discriminated kind group.
