An apparatus is provided for oral fluid collection from the mouth the apparatus having a fluid resistant shield adjacent one portion or side of the absorbent to support the absorbent after the absorbent is moist with oral fluid and the shield further operatin g to block the collection or mucosal transudate from the gum and teeth margin. A method of collection saliva while excluding the collection of mucosal transudate is provided wherein blocking of a portion of an absorbent is performed and the blocked portion of the absorbent is placed adjacent the teeth and gums to exclude any direct collection of mucos al transudate.
