A method for treating autoimmune disease, or the pain and/or insomnia associated with autoimmune disease, in a mammalian subject, particularly a human, which method comprises administering a therapeutically effective amount of certain 2-amino purine compounds to the subject. The compounds particularly useful are antiviral compounds exemplified by acyclovir, valacyclovir, penciclovir and famciclovir. The compounds are administered at doses significantly higher (4 to 12 times) than the dose level currently approved and used to treat currently recognized manifestations of viral infections. Currently approved doses result in blood levels of about 0.5-1.0 micrograms/ml. This new technique results in blood levels of about 3-10 micrograms/ml with about 6 micrograms per ml being optimal.
