An apparatus and a method for controlling intensity of flash of digital imaging devices are provided to determine whether a zoom lens is driven based on a distance which approximately estimates a distance to a subject in order to measure a distance to the subject, thereby controlling intensity of flash based on the measured distance. A distance estimating unit(101) calculates an estimated distance to a subject which is a photographing object. A distance calculating unit(102) compares the estimated distance with an effective distance to calculate an actual distance to the subject. A flash controller(103) controls intensity of flash based on the actual distance.
