A drinking water trough (10) for animals that is able to be supported above ground level by a fence is disclosed. The trough includes; an open topped body (11) to hold water; a hanger mounting (16) either coupled to or formed integrally with the body; a cavity (27) defined at least in part by the hanger mounting; and a float valve (21) that has a float (30) which is at lest partially located within or above the cavity. Locating the float valve relative to the hanger rather than in the body of water allows a greater area of the body to be available for animals to drink from.
